Try Not To Use Your Vehicle’s Air Conditioner To Conserve Gas

January 28th, 2012

Most drivers today are trying to find ways to cut down on fuel expenses as the price of gas goes up. On the plus side, there are straightforward ways to help the driver limit the amount of fuel they use. It does not require any more work or cost to help you reduce the amount of fuel your car consumes.

The most detrimental thing you can do is purchase products that claim to improve gas mileage as many are unproven. The EPA is doing in depth studies on these products and discovered that all of them do not work as advertised. It is best to steer clear of products that depend on gimmicks and tall tales to make a sale. An easy way to reduce fuel, that is only important at certain times, is to leave the air conditioner off. By leaving the ac unit on, the car is not only using more fuel but it also loses power as well as responsiveness. The engine’s efficiency is impacted by using the air conditioner, and it’ll decrease the gas mileage, as well. Except if the inside of your car is totally unbearable, it will be a good idea to leave the air conditioner off.

This tends to make driving conditions a little less comfortable, but that is often evened out by having more money, by buying less gas. This is something that many of us may be reluctant to do in order to save on gas. Several years ago, air conditioners just didn’t exist in cars. You can be more comfortable driving if you drive during the times of the day as soon as the temperature is cooler. If you don’t have a pretty rigid schedule, you should be able to do, at least some of your driving, during the cooler times of day. When possible, make your drives in the morning or maybe in the evenings.

If you ever drive on an open route, you could leave the windows rolled down to let the air circulate and keep the car cool. This is the way drivers in the old days used to keep their car from getting hot on the inside. Although there will be some knock in fuel efficiency with the windows down, it doesn’t compare to the cost of using the air conditioner. You might have to put up with the heat of summer in order to save on your fuel costs. Many of us are getting to be quite attached to the luxuries that are provided in cars today. The average contemporary driver isn’t aware of what it was like before. We’re residing in a time when things have to be prioritized, and saving money on fuel might be more important than comfort.

It may be frustrating to be driving in extreme heat and not think about the end goal. If however you observe that your fuel cost dropping, you’ll feel it worth the effort. Just by not switching on the air conditioner unless it is absolutely necessary will save you money on gas.
